Culture, Values, Identities

We invite scholars, researchers and practitioners for a seminar, to be held on 14th October 2022 in Krakow,

Call for papers

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear Friends and Colleagues,

being aware of the fact that the axiological reflection is not widely taken up in the world of science today, we propose to return to reflections on values.

The invitation is directed to all those for whom culture and values are important phenomena in their research work. We would like to pose questions concerning the status of culture itself, its relation to nature and values. We would also like to discuss whether contemporary culture is still constituted by such values as truth, goodness and beauty or whether they have been replaced by new ones, and if so, by which ones. We will also take up the question of identity in its ontic and socio-political dimensions, noticing its current problematic status.

We plan to address these issues in a comparative context. Thus, colleagues representing different disciplines are welcome to join a debate during which we will consider whether cultural differences, resulting from accepted and practiced values, can constitute a platform for consensus and collaboration (because the fact that they can and do constitute a platform for conflict is abundantly clear).

Constellations of which values, cultures and actions may contribute to creating a space in which an individual and a community will be able to shape their identity in a harmonious way, not fluid but resistant to quickly passing fashions, ideologies, political, social or religious narrations? Have classical values eroded? Or rather, are they being marginalised in the face of postmodern proposals that appear attractive because they promise a new, better world? To what extent has the pandemic influenced the revaluation of individual and community existence? These are just a few of the many questions that can be posed in the context of the triad under discussion: culture - values - identity.

We invite scholars, researchers and practitioners for a seminar, to be held on 14th October 2022 in Krakow, Collegium Maius, 15 Jagiellońska Street, Poland. For a stationary event, a conference fee of 500 PLN (ca. 120 EUR) is planned, to be paid by the end of April. Transfer details will be provided at a later date.

In case the pandemic does not allow us to meet in person, we will meet on-line.

The following leading topics are suggested:

  • Culture and its status
  • Values in culture (diversity of cultures and diversity of values)
  • Culture and nature
  • Ontic status of values
  • “Classical" versus "contemporary" values
  • Identity as a process
  • Identity at a crossroads

Please send your application together with an abstract of your presentation (max. 200 words) to mrelacje@gmail.com by 30th March 2022.

Papers after positive double-blind review will be published in the indexed scientific journal Intercultural Relations, planned for October 2022. For this reason, we will ask potential authors - seminar participants - to submit the full text of their presentation by 31st August 2022, to the above e-address.

Paper template will be provided to the Authors after registration. English is the language of both the event and the publication to attract an international audience.
